The Rabbis teach that Torah was given down in fire, and it's transmitted in fire.    This might be the year to touch the flame and join in the eons old Jewish process of midrash - of exploring and seeking truth, which can be grabbed as completely as a burning flame. We turn over the received tradition and the revealed souls with beginner's mind and voracious creativity. As we interpret and grow, so does...Read more...

Celebrating 95 Years of Jewish Life in Beacon

05/10/2016 11:51:00 AM

May10

Way back in 1894, Samuel Beskin, originally of Russia, showed up in Beacon, NY, the first Jew to do so.

Beskin was followed by Affron, Cahn, Fisch, Ginsberg, Green, Lewis, Pearson, Ritter, Werber and many more.

On May 27, 1921, that crew of Jews formally incorporated Beacon Hebrew Alliance.

Now, 95 years later, we are going to celebrate and continue what they started!

Join us for New...Read more...

For what do we use the Holocaust?

05/03/2016 04:31:00 AM

May3

At the risk of stating the obvious, the Holocaust is first and foremost, the murder of six million Jewish human beings, the particular ancestors of many in this room, perhaps, and collectively, men, women and children who are among the ancestors of the Jewish people and of humanity as a whole.

But while the Holocaust was clearly an attack on Jews, it was also an attack on Judaism. Rabbi Yitz Greenberg has pointed out...Read more...

Structures Built on Lies

Apr26

We are in the middle of Pesach, the holiday which celebrates the Exodus of our ancestors, the Israelites, going out from under oppression to build a more just society.

It is a fine and good thing for us to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy. The horrors of the 20th century are a constant reminder of how relentlessly oppressive governments can be and what a blessing it can be to live in this country.

And yet,...Read more...

Prayer as Practice: New Service on Sunday Mornings

04/05/2016 08:47:00 AM

Apr5

It's tempting to think of prayer as an eloquent form of begging.

Please let me live. Please let me get this job. Please let my team win this football game.   If we learn the "right" words to the prayers, if we come to shul and sit and stand at the proper times, if we get it right, then our prayers will work.   It's tempting to think that's how prayer works and it is equally tempting to...Read more...

Purim and Justice

03/17/2016 09:41:00 AM

Mar17

Tonight begins the holiday of Purim - we're excited for our Megillah reading and spiel tonight and our Purim Carnival on Sunday.

Beyond the fabulous joy and revelry, there is a hard political reality to Purim. Back in the day, insecure political forces marshaled hate and violence and blamed all the troubles of Shushan on a small minority. The wicked Haman said, " 'There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among...Read more...
