It's not up to you... But you have to do your part

It’s not up to us to finish the task of fixing the world, but we’re also not free to neglect the work. This week, we deepened our study of that verse from Pirkei Avot by finding specific things each of us could commit to doing to help fix problems in the world.

Each student filled out a commitment card to take home, with one thing they promised to do to help fix the world. I encourage parents to support their children in doing their part!

We learned that we should not wait to complete a task, because there is a lot of work, and we may not have time later! This connects to a verse from Pirkei Avot that we learned several weeks ago, which also instructed us not to wait to study Torah until we have time, because we may not have time to study later, either.

We also learned the Kabbalistic story of creation, which tells how at the beginning of time, there were vessels filled with divine light, which shattered when they came into the world. Our task is to collect the pieces of those vessels by doing the work of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world).

I strongly encourage families of children in classes Hey and Vav (fifth and sixth grades) to sign up for the Remind class Jonathan started. He has shared some excellent resources related to the content your children have been learning at Masa. This is a great way for children to deepen their learning, or to catch up on things they may have missed.

Coming up:

This Friday, Masa from 4:00-6:00. Mini Minyan 5:30-6:00. Kiddush and Potluck 6:00-7:00. Lab Shabbat beginning at 7:00. At this Friday’s shabbat, we will honor and celebrate mother nature with mindful eating, dance, and prayer. All ages are welcome, but younger children will need close supervision.

This Sunday, Masa from 9:30-12:30

Community News:

On February 21 and 22, the Beacon Players will be performing I Never Saw Another Butterfly, a play written by a survivor of Terezin. Masa student Asha Marcus is one of the actors, and the play would be a good opportunity for older students and their families to learn more about how some people maintained their humanity in terrible circumstances.
