If I Am Only For Myself, What Am I?

Last week, we continued to explore the verse from Pirkei Avot where Rabbi Hillel asks “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” We moved from examining what it means to be for ourselves to learning about some of the ways we can be for others as well. Our younger students learned about collective action through stories, and you might enjoy reading Joelito’s Big Decision and Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Maker’s Strike of 1909.

Our students have also continued with their Hebrew learning, with the older students beginning to learn some reading along with spoken Hebrew Through Movement. With Debbie Broshi teaching the third and fourth grade class, I had the pleasure of beginning to teach Hebrew Through Movement to our kindergarten class. They were certainly excited to get to take part in that learning!

Jonathan Billig would like to invite the families of our fifth and sixth grade students to sign up for a Remind class where he will share resources and updates specifically for those students. Click this link to join the group for fifth and sixth grade families! You might also want to check out this Google Doc with a growing list of resources for learning!

At closing circle last Sunday, Jonathan recommended an excellent video discussing this week’s Torah portion from BimBam. This week’s portion, Shemot, tells the story of Moses’ early life. (I encourage families to check out this resource each week, as the videos are short, interesting, and informative, and they give a good opportunity to discuss the weekly Torah portion with your children!)

If you have a child who will be between the ages of 2 and 4 by September, or if you know someone who does, I highly recommend the BHA Preschool. There are info sessions coming up on February 7 and 13, both at 9:15 am. RSVP to Ilana, our Preschool Director. Check out the BHA Preschool page for more information.

Coming up:
