Beacon Hebrew Alliance is looking for a Director of Education.

We are a rapidly growing synagogue organized around the big idea that Judaism is a pool of living waters in which to swim, rather than a fragile heirloom we're afraid of breaking. In this community,  there are no "consumers" of Jewish life, only "producers."

Specifically, we are looking to build on our successful experiential learning environment, with the goal of helping families engage with Judaism as a resource for addressing the real issues of lived life.

The Director of Family Education will be responsible for:

  1. Directly overseeing our Hebrew School program for 30+ children aged 5-14.

  2. Supervising our Nature Based Jewish Preschool

  3. Creating informal and formal educational opportunities which are well integrated within the life of the synagogue.

  4. Developing our staff, including performance evaluation and ongoing feedback.

  5. Developing and overseeing invigorating and meaningful coming of age ceremonies for our b'nai mitzvah aged students.

  6. Cultivating reliable administrative processes for budgeting, communications, etc. as they apply to the educational goals of BHA.

?

The successful candidate will have:

  • Exceptional leadership, communication and project-management skills.

  • A creative, student-centered approach to education, and a willingness to explore formal, experiential, individual, group, on-line learning, and emerging technologies.

  • The ability to work creatively and flexibly with our clergy (Rabbi Brent Spodek and Cantor Ellen Gersh), our lay leadership and the larger community.

  • The ability to coach and lead a diverse array of community educators in a collaborative and collegial work environment.

  • The ability to inspire others with their love of Judaism.

  • In depth knowledge of the trends in Jewish education and the ability to adapt and implement cutting-edge programs.

  • Strong knowledge of Judaism, Hebrew and Jewish education.

?

For more about BHA and our approach to Judaism, please see our vision statement, as well as Rabbi Brent Spodek's articles I (don't) Believe in God and Judaism from the Inside Out.

Interested candidates should send a resume and your cover letter to education@beaconhebrewalliance.org

. In your cover letter, please address two of the following three questions:

  • What has been one of your most powerful spiritual experiences?

  • What is the purpose of Jewish education?

  • What has been your best experience as a student and/or teacher?
