Summary |
The Poor People's Campaign is well underway, here are some things coming up
May 30 - Non-Violent Civil Disobedience Training with SURJ. We will cover: Why do we mobilize for action? How do we plan successful actions? What tactics do we use when facing a show of power from the other side? How do we reduce harm and deescalate tense situations? This training is appropriate for all experience levels and will prepare us to show up and put our bodies on the line for social justice. You must RSVP here https://bit.ly/2wBxJJB to attend this training. Suggested donation: $5 - $10 at the door (no one turned away). All proceeds will go to Hudson Valley Black Lives Matter. Childcare and snacks provided - please sign up for childcare on the RSVP form.
June 5 - Organizing Meeting and Training with the Poor People's Campaign. This will be a chance to learn about structure and vision of the campaign, and how you can take part. The second portion of the meeting will be a training in Nonviolent Moral Fusion Direct Action, for those who intend to participate in the 40 Days of Action. This will take part in Poughkeepsie; details and RSVP are here. Flyer for the event is here.
June 11 - Poor People's Campaign Albany Day of Action - Rabbi Brent Spodek and others will be speaking at the rally Albany on the need for Living Wages and Social Services. The rally will be at 2:00 PM on June 11; more information will be shared as it is available
Volunteering - If you would like to help organize either of these, please be in touch with Beth Poague.
Further Reading - Jelani Cobb has a great profile on Rev William Barber in the New Yorker and Arnie Eisen, the chancelor of the Seminary where Rabbi Brent was ordained put out this statement.
