The Storm Offered Us Sabbath

Many people who live a religious life, or aspire to one, pray that God will appear to them in a cacophonous moment of revelation.

We routinely offer the priestly blessing, which Aaron offered to the children of Israel.

May GOD bless you, and keep you;

May GOD make God's face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you;

Dear Friends:

Today is the very first day of the Hebrew month of Adar, which means that Purim is fast upon us. If you'd like to know more about Purim as a whole, take a look here, and please see below for ceremonies and celebrations we have cooking here at BHA.

Shalach Manot: One of the central and loveliest customs...Read more...

Groove is in the Heart

Every language is a lens, an optic, through which we see the world.

Some things carry more or less the same meaning in one language as in another. There's not any real difference between a Spanish mesa, a Hebrew shulchan and an English table.

Sometimes though, there is a big difference in what languages call things. The English word prayer connotes asking, requesting, even begging. But this thing we call...Read more...

#HowDoYouShabbat?

02/01/2015 05:22:00 PM

Feb1

For many folks, Shabbat (Sabbath), is the site of much of our spiritual longing and searching, as well it should be. In a traditional Jewish mind, there are few things more precious than Shabbat.

In our modern world, Shabbat can be seen as a relic, the word musty in our mouths, like grandma's fancy dinner plates that haven't been dusted off since the last holiday. But like a beautiful sunrise, Shabbat can be trite when it is...Read more...

The Storm Offered Us Sabbath

On Monday night, as news reports told us to prepare for a historic, crippling storm, the people around me didn't seem as if they were anticipating the apocalypse.

People were making sure they had working flashlights and bottled water, always good things to do, but there was more. One friend needed to take an emergency Oreo run before the snow came, and there were dozens of texts and emails figuring who was hosting a blizzard party...Read more...

Instinct for Justice, but no Method

It took a long time, but Moses did eventually grow up.

As a young man, before the Holy One charged him with leading the Israelites to freedom, he took his own steps toward making justice manifest in the world.

He acted three times before the encounter at the Burning Bush, and each time, he intervened to save someone powerless suffering abuse at the hands of someone mighty.

When Moses first left...Read more...

My wife and I are both graduates of one of the most famously liberal colleges in the country. I learned many valuable things there, including how to read and understand theorists on racial violence and colonialism, such as Cornell West, and Franz Fanon.

That's part of why it's always so striking when I show my kids our wedding album. Most of the faces there are white, and most of the ones that aren't belong to friends of...Read more...

Director of Family Learning - Beacon Hebrew Alliance (part time/full time)

Jan8

Beacon Hebrew Alliance is looking for a leader who can serve as the educational and administrative director of our educational efforts.   We are a rapidly growing synagogue organized around the big idea that Judaism is a pool of living waters in which to swim, rather than a fragile heirloom we're afraid of breaking. In this community,  there are no "consumers" of Jewish life, only...Read more...

Radical Openness

In the course of my spiritual journeys, I have been blessed with many rabbis, many mentors. Some I've been privileged to know personally and learn from directly; others, I know through their writings and their students.

Among the most influential of mentors I've never met is Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1996). His name isn't commonly known, but his teachings have had a profound impact on spiritual seekers of all stripes....Read more...
