Job listing: Sunday School Teacher

Position Title: Sunday School Teacher
Organization: Beacon Hebrew Alliance

About BHA MASA: MASA is the name of our supplemental education for children from kindergarten through b’nai mitzvah age. We gather once or twice a week, depending on age, to daven, learn about Jewish culture, and learn the Hebrew for reading prayers and blessings. As much as possible, we learn Judaism through doing Judaism, and we also do our best to have fun along the way.

MASA is part of the Beacon Hebrew Alliance, a small and vibrant, progressive synagogue located in the heart of the Hudson Valley, which currently serves about 150 families. At BHA, we believe that Jews from all backgrounds, their partners, and their families can come together in a supportive, warm and open-minded community to create a meaningful, joyful Jewish life. The teacher will independently teach the first/second or third/fourth grade class when we break out into age groups, and will teach collaboratively with other teachers when the entire group is together. This position is for the school year, Sundays from 9am-1pm.

  • Experience teaching or working with children between the ages of 4 and 12 in a group setting.
  • Familiarity with Hebrew sufficient to teach beginning Hebrew readers to decode the language of blessings and common Hebrew words.
  • Ability to work well with other teachers, and to communicate with parents.
  • Interest in Jewish traditions and hands-on learning.

Responsibilities:

The teacher will be expected to:

  • Support students in forming their own Jewish identities. Work with students to explore aspects of Judaism. Work with co-teachers and the Education Director to track student progress and needs. Develop individualized approaches to support each child’s learning.
  • Work collaboratively with other teachers and the Director to teach and supervise children when the whole group is together (such as when davening or at snack).
  • Plan and teach lessons on specific subjects the Education Director defines (example: 45 minutes of Hebrew learning covering one blessing, or one vowel form, followed by 45 minutes of teaching about a designated theme or subject).
  • Communicate with parents directly about each student’s progress and needs (checking in when students are dropped off/picked up).
