Masa 5781 A la carte

We have heard from a number of parents who are wary of signing up for Masa this year. We understand that distance learning is challenging! Some parents have asked if we could provide an "a la carte" option for Masa, so that their children can continue to feel connected to the BHA community. We have spent some time considering the different possibilities, and put together some options for you to choose from.

Option 1: Our Elective Courses

The first option is to sign up for one of our elective courses, this option is appropriate for children in grades 3 and above and will meet once a week for a seven-week term.  You'll have 6 courses to choose from each term, if you sign up for one course the cost is $300 for the term, selecting 2 courses in the same term will cost $450.

We will have four 7-week terms of Elective Courses this year.

Fall Term: October 4-November 20
Winter Term: November 30-January 29 (with a two-week winter break)
Spring Term 1: February 8-March 26
Spring Term 2: April 5-May 28

Our Fall Term electives are as follows:

Course 1: Soul Strolls with Rabbi Brent, Mondays 4:00-5:00 Rabbi Brent will gather in person, outdoors, with students to guide students in connecting to their souls through nature.

Course 2: Masa Social Justice Book Group, Tuesdays 4:00-5:00 Students will read and discuss age-appropriate books focused on areas of social justice. (example: Not My Idea: A book about whiteness)

Course 3: Conversational Hebrew, Wednesdays 6:00-7:00 learn Hebrew words and phrases through games, stories, and drama.

Course 4: Exploring Prayers Through Art, Wednesdays 5:00-6:00 Learn a prayer, and connect to its meaning through artwork. By the end of this class, students will have created a personally illustrated siddur (prayer book).

Course 5: Masa Jewish Stories Book Group, Thursdays 4:00-5:00 Students will read and discuss a novel or a collection of short stories (example: The Inquisitor's Apprentice).

Course 6: Exploring Jewish Foods, Sundays 4:00-5:00 Students and their parents will explore what makes food "Jewish," learn the blessings for food, and cook that food at home. We recommend that children under 10 join the class with an adult.

Option 2: Monthly Activity Packets

The second option is to sign up for monthly packets, similar to the one you received prior to Rosh Hashanah. These packets are appropriate for children in grades K-2 as well as older children and will be delivered to your house once a month. I have heard from a number of folks that their children really enjoyed engaging with the activities we provided. A year-long subscription to these boxes would be $180.

Whether or not you sign up for Masa, we encourage you to join us for Mini Minyan on Friday evenings. This year it will be led by our b-mitzvah class, and I know they will bring a great deal of energy and insight to the experience!

Information Sessions

Please join us for an info session, either on Sunday, October 11th at 3 PM, or on Wednesday, October 14th at 8:30 PM. Please also contact Julia with any thoughts, questions, or concerns. I am open to hearing your ideas, and I welcome thoughts for how we can keep families connected this year!

The added benefits of signing up for a full year of Masa:

Children in K-2 who sign up for the full year of Masa will have ongoing support from a teacher, who will help the child to complete the activities in the package, as well as offering added content through stories and age-group learning. Children in grades 3 and above will have individual Hebrew learning, the support of a learning coach to help them complete their activities, and age-group learning.

Children preparing for B-Mitzvah will be required to commit to the full year, and the electives focused on B-Mitzvah preparation will only be available to families who commit to the full year.
