This Fall, BHA Preschool will be reopening on-site, 100% outdoors in our school garden and yard, with one cohort of 12 students plus three teachers, a lead and two assistants. School will run Sept. 9-Nov. 24, Tuesday-Friday mornings, with the intention of developing winter and spring programming to follow. In addition to keeping our cohort smaller and working/playing 100% outdoors, we will be following NYS child-care guidelines for Covid-19 prevention and response. If closure is necessary, we will provide a hands-on remote curriculum.

Position Overview: 

BHA Preschool seeks an assistant teacher who is reliable, proactive, and attuned to the emotional and physical needs of young children. This teacher will participate in our 100% outdoors, garden-based, Jewish program, supporting the lead teachers to meet each child’s needs and guiding the children through daily routines. Should the school be required to close due to Covid-19-related issues, the assistant will help create and design remote learning experiences. This position requires 16 hours per week, Tuesday-Friday mornings, beginning August 31, 2020, through November, 2020, with potential for more. Compensation begins at $15 per hour. 


● Experience and skill in caring for children ages 2-4 in a group setting. 

● Experience attending to children’s individual well-being and hygiene. 

● Familiarity with progressive, child-centered education. Knowledge about or willingness to participate in Jewish traditions. 

● Knowledge about or willingness to participate in garden-based, nature-based learning outdoors regardless of the weather. 

● An energetic, flexible, and open-minded personality. 

● A commitment to observing and learning from children’s play and behavior to support individual development, inspire positive social connection, and to build emergent curriculum. 

● Clear, positive communication skills with children and their families. 

● Creativity and knowledge to support fluidity between on-site and remote curriculum. 

● Excellent references. 


● Help set up the learning spaces each school day. 

● Support the students’ participation in school routines, play, and learning activities, outdoors on a daily basis. 

● Attend to each child’s personal hygiene and social-emotional needs. 

● Help children with toileting, handwashing, and diaper changes. 

● Support the students during transitions in the day. 

● Support individual students’ self-expression as students observe, question, and investigate. 

● Work with the lead teachers to document children’s language, activity, and progress. 

● Meet weekly with the lead teachers to reflect and plan. 

● Help children avoid spreading germ and keep equipment and materials clean. 

● Support implementation of remote curriculum if needed.
