BHA Preschool is a half-day program for children ages two to four. Our garden-based, child-centered curriculum nourishes children’s wonder and healthy development. Jewish traditions, woven throughout our work and play, cultivate a spirit of curiosity and gratitude. Read about our program here.

This Fall, BHA Preschool will be run nearly 100% outdoors in our school garden and yard, with one cohort of 12-14 students plus three teachers, a lead and two assistants. We open on Thursday, September 9th, and run Tuesday-Friday mornings throughout the school year, with the exception of school breaks. We will follow NYS child-care guidelines for Covid-19 prevention and response.

Position Overview: 

BHA Preschool seeks an assistant teacher who is reliable, poised, and attuned to the emotional and physical needs of young children. This teacher will collaborate with the other teachers to meet each child’s needs and guide the children through daily routines. This position begins in early September and requires 16-18 hours per week, Tuesday-Friday mornings. Compensation begins at $17 per hour.


  • Familiarity and/or experience with a child-centered, constructivist approach to early childhood education.

  • Strong ability to communicate positively with coworkers, children, and family members with a creative, flexible, problem-solving mindset. 

  • Excellent attunement to young children's social-emotional needs, and skills in co-regulation of emotions as well as conflict resolution.

  • Gentle, respectful attitude in all aspects of childcare, including diapering, toileting, feeding, and changing.

  • Experience developing and facilitating lessons and activities for children ages two to four years old.

  • Willingness to participate in Jewish traditions.

  • Commitment to practicing anti-racist and anti-bias education.

  • Comfort with the natural environment, including all kinds of weather.

  • Excellent references.


  • Help set up and clean up the learning spaces each school day.

  • Support the students’ participation in school routines, play time, and learning activities.

  • Attend to each child’s personal hygiene and social-emotional needs.

  • Help children with toileting, handwashing, and diaper changes.

  • Support the students during transitions in the day.

  • Support individual students’ self-expression as students observe, question, and investigate.

  • Document children’s language, activity, and progress.

  • Meet weekly with the teaching team to reflect and plan.

  • Help children avoid spreading germ, and keep equipment and materials clean.

  • Support implementation of remote curriculum if needed.
