Last weekend Anabelle, Esther, Gabe and Noa told the story of Ruth to the younger Masa children. This story is about chesed, lovingkindness. It is about showing loving kindness to all people, both citizens and refugees. They chose 4 teachings from the story. They talked about how each teaching relates to the story of Ruth and to their own lives.

1) There is great power in helping others.

Naomi shows both Ruth and Orpah kindness. Because she was kind, that kindness is returned to her. Boaz shows kindness towards Ruth because he hears of her kindness that she showed to Naomi, her mother in law.

In helping others, together we have power. We attended a rally to speak up against violence and racism. Standing up for something important empowers us to make change in the world.

2) We are defined by our actions not our past.

Naomi and her family might have made a bad decision in the past to leave Bethlehem and settle in Moab, but Naomi's good actions in the present undermine anything that happened in the past.

Our society has made mistakes, but we need to stand up and say we made mistakes. We have to say that we can be better. Recognize the mistake and fight back against it.

3)The power of positivity cannot be understated- hope even in the most devastating times of our lives.

Naomi's husband and two sons die. She has lost everything but does not give up hope. She gathers her strength and moves back to her home.

So many terrible things are going on right now. In the march on Main St., people are using their power to help change the situation. Instead of accepting the way things are, they came together and found hope in working to make things better.

4) Doing the right thing often takes great sacrifice.

Ruth left her family in order to do the right thing of not letting Naomi travel alone.

It is not always easy to do the thing that is the best choice. Staying home and being safe is not easy to do, but we have to sacrifice our freedoms to make sure that people are safe. I sacrificed going to see a friend to be safe and not be with people.

This story is about chesed, lovingkindness. It is about showing loving kindness to all people, both citizens and refugees.
