BHA's Rosh Chodesh Group
BHA's Rosh Chodesh Group
ALL ARE WELCOME TO JOIN BHA's Rosh Chodesh group. It began 18 years ago when twelve women, sitting in my living room, decided they wanted to do more than just hang out together. We wanted to do more than community service; we wanted to connect service to the ritual of a woman's Rosh Chodesh group.
We gathered around, discussed issues and made plans for the month, related teachings, sang a blessing of gratitude, and began knitting caps for chemo patients. Since then our small group has grown and gotten involved in a variety of community service projects:
- Over the past 2 years we have worked with our dear member, Vera Zelenetsky, collecting food and toiletries for an alternative high school. Each week Vera picks up our contributions and fills backpacks for families that don't have enough food to last through the weekend.
- We've made small pillows for post-surgical breast cancer patients (pictured left).
- This past weekend we celebrated the beginning of Adar l with a blessing of gratitude, a teaching, singing and had some delicious snacks before packing numerous bags with food, toiletries and mittens (shalach manot). We keep these bags in our cars to give to people on the street who are in need.
On March 17th at 1:30 we will be gathering at BHA to celebrate Adar ll. We will share snacks and drinks as we read the story of Purim from a different perspective. There will also be some teachings from various female scholars and a list of organizations that we can assist that help women around the world who are victims of abuse. We will also make 2 blankets; one as in years past to raffle off at our Community Purim Carnival on March 24th and the other for our shomrim (those who watch over the body until burial).
On April 14th at 3:00 we will be gathering at Beacon Rec Center on West Center St. for our 5th Annual Women's Seder. We will celebrate the story of an oppressed people becoming liberated and creating their own nation. We will celebrate our freedom, with the understanding that there are many women who are still enslaved.
