Or
L’Dor – September 2008

Message
From President William Smith
Welcome back!
It's hard to believe that the summer is over and we're now in a countdown mode for the High Holidays. I look forward to seeing you all, often, during the upcoming holidays. The full service schedule is included in this edition of Or L'Dor, so be sure to check it out so you know what's happening.
Now that we are at the beginning of the 2008/09 season, I invite ALL of you to volunteer and make this a terrific year, one that you find fulfilling on many levels. BHA has many needs, from leading a fundraising project, to spearheading a clean-up effort inside and outside the building, to brainstorming about programming, to helping with existing projects and much, much more. Please volunteer your time and your skills!
Because of the very expensive water main work we had to pay for last spring, we need teams of volunteers to come forth to help with projects that had to be put on the back burner. In broad terms, these include interior painting and outside landscaping. We need to refinish the front doors, which are made of beautiful wood but getting extremely weather beaten. If we don't address that shortly, the doors may become too damaged to repair. We need a major clean up of the building's grounds, including weeding (even the walkways, which have weeds growing within the asphalt and cement), raking, and more.
I want to thank all of our summer volunteers who led services and provided onegs. I'm happy to report that we had a minyan every week during July and August. I'm hoping that with Rabbi Josh's return even more of you will attend both Friday night and Saturday morning services and continue to show your support for Cantor Ellen and the lay leaders who step in to ensure we have weekly services.
Thank you as well to the Education Committee, which met throughout the summer to plan out the school year for the children of the congregation.
A special thank you, as always, to the Ritual Committee, which meets monthly to ensure the ritual aspects of BHA run smoothly. Their work is especially noteworthy as we come to the High Holidays with an impressive schedule of Torah readers, aliyahs and other honors. Please, if you haven't yet accepted your honors, do so immediately (to Ann Wolfson) so that services run as smoothly as possible.
We will, once again, have a break-the-fast celebration at the conclusion of Yom Kippur, which will be organized by Alan and Rachel Zollner and committee. Additional hands will be needed for set-up and clean up and I urge you to volunteer to make the dinner a major success.
Another request: please sign up for Onegs. Services are always followed by some food and without sponsors the selection will be minimal. Nothing fancy is needed to create a lovely oneg, just parve foods for Friday night and parve or dairy for Saturday. Contact Laura at lliebeck@aol.com to let her know what weekend works best for you.
That's it for now. Shalom….Bill

Food Drive to Benefit Dutchess Outreach - Donate Today - Yom Kippur Drive to Follow
Dutchess County is experiencing a food crisis with the numbers of hungry people increasing. To meet the needs, we're collecting food staples in a Peanut Butter and Jelly drive organized by Linda Tafapolsky, director of Jewish Family Services. Please deposit your donations in the boxes at the information table.
BHA's annual food drive for Yom Kippur will begin at the High Holidays. Please fill a grocery bag or two with non-perishable foods, personal care products and home cleaning items and bring them back to the shul after the holidays, depositing them at the rear of the downstairs sanctuary. We'll be donating the groceries to Dutchess Outreach for distribution to the needy.
Rabbi Josh Available for Personal and Group Meetings
Rabbi Josh is available to meet with individuals and groups on weekends he is at BHA. Josh arrives on Friday evenings to lead services and leaves at noon on Sundays.
